Black and Yellow – The 2018-2019 School Year Begins!

Well, it’s not Pittsburgh I saw this morning, but school busses – black stripes, yellow paint.  Of course the song started running in my mind - although the words and meanings don’t match up, I love the song, it’s upbeat and matched my mood this morning.   As I sat at the stoplights and pulled into the parking lot at school, the busses were out in full force dry-run practicing their routes for the start of school next week.  For teachers, it is our week to go back and prepare as well.

Summer was great, but I am excited and ready to come back.  Starting my 14th year in Fulton County and 15th year overall, I suddenly realized I am also starting half-career this year – where did all the time go?  I will confess that today’s trip to school was not the first time I have been at school this month; truthfully it’s the 3rd or 4th.  I like to get my room set-up early, and with the math coaching role I am taking on this year along with still teaching a class, it was more important than usual.

am teaching Honors Pre-calculus again this year, and about 1/3-1/2 of my roster consists of students I taught 2 years ago in Accelerated Algebra 1, so I am really excited about the opportunity to teach them again and see how they have grown into the mini-adults that they are as juniors!

I am coaching the Algebra 1 and Geometry teams this year and will be writing more about that this year as well as my own classroom journey.  Both teams have great groups of passionate teachers who are eager to learn and/or change up past practices, and I am lucky to be working with each and every one of them.

This will probably be the shortest of my “Blaugusts” this year.  Right now I hear my colleagues arriving and greeting each other in the hallways, so I am anxious to go get caught up and grab free faculty breakfast with them – who doesn’t love free food?

It will be a busy week working with the Algebra and Geo teams as well as my department chair, but at least my room is pretty much ready to go and I have the first couple of weeks of lesson plans ready.  I will enjoy this kind of readiness for now as I know it won’t last as the year starts and pulls forward!

To all my ATL teacher friends and colleagues – I wish you a great first day back and AWESOME start to your school year!
