Says the guy taking a year off after teaching for 10+ years, so some bias is possible... incidentally, our board (up in Ontario) allows this sort of "self funded leave". Basically, I've spent the last two years receiving only 2/3rds of my salary, so that this year, I receive 2/3rd of my salary even though I'm not teaching. It shifts the financial issues back to me (stretching 2 years into 3 years), but one can do 3/4th or even 5/6ths. There are certain requirements, like I have to go back for at least a year after this, and I can't be teaching elsewhere, that sort of thing, but maybe it's another way of approaching things.

I'm glad you're still interested in continuing the "Day in the Life", I imagine it's going to go somewhere unique. (Again says the guy who posts weekly about not teaching, mostly writing, so bias.) I hope you've been able to enjoy your tutoring, and your time with family too.
